Hey, I’m Cassie, and welcome to A Little Wanderess!
Here are 9 quick facts about me:
1. I’m super passionate about the environment and in supporting local, small, ethical business.
2. I follow a pescatarian diet.
3. I used to be a flight attendant! I worked for a major Canadian airline for over a year, but left to pursue a job opportunity in Italy.
4. I’ve lived in 6 Canadian provinces (BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, and NS) and visited 11 out of the 13 Canadian provinces and territories. My family moved around a lot growing up, and I’m super grateful that my parents tried their best to show us as much of any province as possible, before we left for the next one!
5. I learned to cook during the pandemic, and love learning new recipes and trying to recreate dishes I had on my travels.
6. I trained in musical theatre in college and technical theatre in uni. Like many theatre artists, I do contract work, and one of my favourite things about booking a gig is getting to go somewhere new!
7. Aside from my home country of Canada, I’ve visited 12 countries so far (on 3 different continents)! In order, they are: the USA, Australia, Mexico, Cuba, Italy, Vatican City, France, Monaco, Spain, Greece, and the UK.
8. I’m very musical and always create a playlist of every place I visit! You can check out my playlists on Spotify here: https://open.spotify.com/user/com77xjzr9vt16ujlq334s9lo?si=1cff2e1c46504b64
9. I never travel without my ukulele, a pack of cards, and a good book to read and then leave behind in my hostel for someone else to enjoy! 🙂
This blog was born in 2019, out of my life-long love of travelling and moving about. At the time, I was working as a regional flight attendant based out of Toronto, ON, and was feeling really confused as to where my life was headed. I was far away from my family, working a job where my coworkers changed every few days, living in a new city, was hardly ever home, and was deep in the post-college blues. Although I got to travel a fair bit on my days off, because I was feeling so homesick, most of my money went to visiting my family across Canada.
So when an email popped up in my inbox about a job teaching English through performance and play to children at Italian summer camps, I jumped at the opportunity! As a kid who had been absolutely obsessed with a) Roman gods and goddesses, and b) Lizzie McGuire, I had dreamt of visiting Italy since elementary school. And now, I finally had the chance! I auditioned, booked the gig, quit the airline, moved out of my apartment, and was on a plane to Rome, less than thirty days later! I had the most amazing summer of my life, and every single day I was abroad felt like a dream come true.
After the summer, I briefly returned to Canada to get my Italian visa sorted, then flew back to Italy in January 2020 to embark on a theatre-for-young-audiences tour. We were staying near Milan in February 2020, when everything started to crumble around us. Our tour was cancelled halfway through, and I returned once again to Halifax… this time, with an uncertain stay length. When it became clear that the pandemic wasn’t going away anytime soon, I embraced building a home here. I enrolled in university. I bought furniture and decorated my apartment. I learned to cook. I learned about local businesses. And I made it a point to visit as many spots in and near Halifax as I could!
Writing has always brought me a lot of joy, and I hope that this blog will inspire others in their travelling journeys! My morals have led me to focus on supporting small, local businesses everywhere I go; I believe that building an ethical life is based on making small sustainable choices each and every day. If you feel the same, and would like to receive travel recommendations and tips from this perspective, then this blog is for you!
Here’s hoping we meet each other in the real world, someday soon! x
